What is the Okarito Community Association?

The Okarito Community Association Inc. (OCA) is an incorporated society of 65 members formed in 1987. Around half the members live at Okarito. The 65 Members of the OCA are a diverse group of people with collectively a long term and profound knowledge of Okarito. They share a common sense of guardianship for the special qualities of Okarito and have collective goals to enhance these qualities for the benefit of Westland, New Zealand and the international community.

 What we do:

The OCA runs the campground, the water scheme, the historic Donovan's Store, and uses the income to care for the village, provide visitor facilities and advocate for environmental protection.

Our formal objectives are:

  • To co-ordinate and express the views of the community on any matters of concern to it, and to take such action in the interests of the community with respect to any matter of concern to it as is appropriate, expedite and practical, and to undertake, encourage and co-ordinate activities for the general well-being of the residents of the community, and to consult with territorial authorities.
  • To improve amenities in the village/settlement of Okarito and the surrounding district.
  • To provide facilities for recreation of all kinds.
  • To cater for the social, recreational and cultural activities of people residing in or visiting the Okarito area.
